Chapter 16
The sparkling silver light of a full moon dances across a flat calm sea as Fearless steadily motors on. It’s three in the morning. Peter Marsh stands at the railing. He breathes in the salt-laced night air as he looks out at the beautiful scene with sadness. He has spent six months aboard this incredible vessel, yet not once has he taken the time to really enjoy the fact that he is at sea. He had been too busy, too focused on the work. Now he is leaving. He takes a sip from the beer he pilfered from the galley fridge and watches as bright green sparks of phosphorescent plankton light up in the ship’s frothy wake. The ethereal glow rushes by like a river past the hull of the ship; he has regrets, and he wishes he didn’t.

Alone in his cabin, Thomas Falcon kneels in front of a small shrine he has constructed to honor his grandmother and the ancestors of his family that passed before her. He feels awkward; this is all very foreign and strange. He is embarrassed, actually, but at the same time what he is doing feels necessary. Like something he has to do, even though he wishes he didn’t.
The photo of the little boy smiling as he sits on the lap of his grandmother is in front of him. She holds him close, her arms wrapped tightly around him; the image has always given Falcon comfort. He stares at it for a while; he doesn’t know how long, really. His cabin is lit only by two small candles. He looks at them as well; he looks again at the photograph. Then he becomes lost.
He’s not sure where he is. Perhaps the candles have gone out, or he’s fallen asleep. He doesn’t know, but suddenly he is awake. Falcon soon realizes he is no longer in his cabin; he’s in the sea, on his solo night dive to the kill-zone one hundred feet deep. Falcon looks up at the shimmering surface of the ocean lit by soft moonlight far above him. He watches as the stream of bubbles rising from his regulator reflect in the moon’s glow. He can see the clear outline of Fearless, with her anchor chains trailing out in front of her.
Falcon looks around. He sees the white sand reflecting the moonlight, the coral heads standing like dark sentinels, and hundreds upon hundreds of dead sharks. No fear rises inside of him this time, he feels no panic, no anger either; he feels only sadness. Falcon swims out over the rotting corpses of the dead sharks. Then, right in front of him, resting on her side, just as he’d first found her, lies the massive body of the female tiger shark.
Falcon stops; he knows this is where he is supposed to be. So he waits. Suddenly, from behind a coral head, a sea snake appears. It’s beautiful, incredibly colored; it seems to glow somehow. The snake’s appearance is astonishing. Falcon recognizes
